Mekong Regional Environmental GovernanceEnvironmental problems are important domestic issues, but often ignore political boundaries as well. In Mainland Southeast Asia, there is a pressing need for improving the capacity of regional institutions to more effectively deal with environmental challenges. To begin to address these issues, the Resources Policy Support Initiative (REPSI) initiated the Mekong Regional Environmental Governance (MREG) research and dialogue group, which brought together researchers, advocates, and policymakers from throughout Mainland Southeast Asia to discuss options and challenges for transboundary environmental governance. MREG consisted of three meetings - held in Chiang Mai in June 2000, Phnom Penh in November 2000, and Vientiane in April 2001 - of a diverse group of participants from civil society, government, and regional institutions. Papers from the MREG process were released in a compilation volume, Mekong Regional Environmental Governance: Perspectives on Opportunities and Challenges, and are available in PDF format by the links to the left and right. For further background information about the substance of MREG, please see the compilaton's Introduction. In April 2002, WRI released a report, Transboundary Environmental Governance: Principles and Practice from Mainland Southeast Asia, which synthesized and expanded on themes from the MREG process. At the final MREG meeting, participants proposed the establishment of an annual regional environmental outlook event. In response the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, the Thailand Environment Institute, and the World Resources Institute have established the Regional Environmental Forum for Mainland Southeast Asia, which will hold the first of its meetings November 2002 in Phnom Penh.
